Ripple Plan 4 Stage Upgrade to Make XRPL Quantum Ready

Ripple Plan 4 Stage Upgrade to Make XRPL Quantum Ready

Ripple, a global cross-border payment network, has announced that it is preparing the XRP Ledger (XRPL) for the future threat of quantum computers with a four-stage security plan through 2028.

The plan will test new security tools and gradually upgrade the network, giving XRP users and developers time to prepare.

Ripple Is Preparing for Quantum Risk

Ripple’s plan is led by Ayo Akinyele, Senior Director of Engineering, with its applied cryptography team working on the upgrade.

The concern is that powerful quantum computers could eventually break the elliptic curve cryptography used by many blockchain networks, including Bitcoin.

Ripple is therefore testing new security methods before such technology becomes a real threat.

Ripple’s Four-Phase Quantum Protection Plan

Ripple has divided the upgrade into four stages, moving from emergency protection to a full mainnet transition.

  • Phase 1 – Quantum Emergency Plan

Ripple is building an emergency system for the possibility that quantum computers break current cryptography earlier than expected. The plan would help users move their accounts to quantum-safe security without exposing their private keys.

  • Phase 2 – Quantum-Safe Algorithms Testing

During H1 2026, Ripple and Project Eleven tested NIST-recommended ML-DSA on AlphaNet. The focus is on checking whether larger quantum-resistant signatures can work without slowing XRPL or increasing transaction costs.

  • Phase 3 – Hybrid Devnet/Testnet Parallel Deployment

During H2 2026, Ripple plans to run quantum-safe and existing cryptography side by side on Devnet and Testnet. Developers can use these networks to test the new system before a mainnet change.

  • Phase 4 – Mainnet Upgrade by 2028

The final stage targets 2028, when Ripple plans to submit an XRPL code amendment for a network-wide move to quantum-resistant security.

XRPL Already Has a Key Advantage

XRPL already has tools that could make a future move to post-quantum security easier. Its key rotation feature lets users change their keys without creating a new account.

The network also supports seed-based key generation, which can help users create new key material during a future security upgrade.

These features are not post-quantum solutions by themselves, but they give XRPL a strong base for a future security upgrade.

Ripple said:

“We’re optimizing for two things in parallel in our roadmap: Preserve XRPL strengths today as we work on post-quantum crypto transition, and prepare for contingencies.”

The next focus is continued testing through 2026, with the full protocol migration targeted for 2028.
